M., Vessels & N. of Thoracic, Abdominal Wall, & Breast Flashcards
Name the intercostal muscles.
- External intercostal m.
- Internal intercostal m.
- Innermost intercostal m.
External Intercostal m origin, insertion and nerve innervation?
O: Inferior border of rib above
I: Superior border of fib below
N: Intercostal n. (T1-T11)
Function of external intercostal m?
Moves ribs superiorly during inspiration.
Direction of muscle fibers for external intercostal m?
Medial & Inferiorly
Internal Intercostal m origin, insertion and nerve innervation?
O: Superior border of rib below
I: Inferior border of rib above
N: Intercostal n. (T1-T11)
Function of internal intercostal m?
Moves rib inferiorly during expiration.
What arteries supply the thoracic wall?
- Posterior intercostal a. (brand of thoracic a)
- Anterior intercostal a.
(branch of internal thoracic a.)
What veins drain the thoracic wall?
- Posterior intercostal v. —>
R side = azygos v
L side = hemiazygos/ accessory zygote v. - Anterior intercostal v. —> directly/ indirectly into internal thoracic v —> R & L brachiocephalic v
What nerves innervates the thoracic wall (intercostal m, skin of chest wall, & parietal pleura?
- anterior rami of upper thoracic spinal n (intercostal n. T1-T11)
- Anterior ramus of spinal n (subcostal n. T12)
Where does the diaphragm attach?
- xiploid process
- costal margin
- end of ribs 11 & 12
- Lumbar vertebra (L1-L3)
—-> converge to form central tendon
What are the 3 foramina in the diaphragm?
- Aortic Hiatus: T12 level
- Esophageal hiatus: T10 level
- Caval opening: T8 level
What nerve innervates the diaphragm?
R & L phrenic nerves (C3,C4,C5)
C3, C4, C5 keeps the diaphragm alive
Function of diaphragm?
Depresses dome (moves inferiorly)
- thus, increases volume to thoracic cavity to decrease P during inspiration
What 3 arteries supply the mammary gland?
- Axillary a.
- Internal thoracic a.
- Intercostal a. (2-4)
What veins drain the mammary gland?
- Axillary v.
- Internal thoracic v.
- Intercostal v.
