Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Sagittal plane?
Divides into L & R sides
Midline/ Median/ Midsattigal plane?
Divides into equal L & R sides
Parasagittal plane?
Divides into unequal L & R sides
Frontal/ Coronal plane?
Divides into anterior & posterior
Transverse/ Cross-sectional/ Horizontal plane?
Divides into superior & inferior.
Oblique plane?
Passes through at an angle.
Between sagittal & coronal.
Ventral?
Anterior - closer to front of body
Dorsal?
Posterior - closer to back of body
Which side is the dorsum and plantar side in the foot?
dorsum - upper surface
plantar- bottom surface
Cephalad?
closer to head (superior)
Caudad/ Caudal
further from head, closer to feet (inferior)
Proximal vs Distal
proximal: closer to trunk
Distal: further from trunk
Ipsilateral?
on same side of midline
Contralateral?
on opposite side of midline
Flexion?
bending/ decreasing angle between body parts
Extension?
straightening/ increasing angle between body parts
What plane do flexion & extension occur in?
Sagittal
Hyperextension?
beyond anatomical position
Abduction?
Moving away from median plane
Abduction happens at which toes & fingers?
toes: 3-5 moving away from 2
Fingers: 2 moves away from 3
Adduction?
Moving towards median plane
What plane does abduction & adduction occur in?
frontal/ coronal plane
What 4 movements make up circumduction?
- Flexion
- Abducation
- Extension
- Adduction
- biaxial movement
FABEA
Protraction & retraction occur in what plane?
Sagittal plane
Elevation and depression occur in what plane?
frontal/ coronal plane
Supination vs pronation?
Supination: forearm rotated laterally (palm up)
**palm up holding SoUP **
pronation: forearm rotated medially (palm down)
Ulnar deviation?
adduction of wrist (pinky side)
Radial deviation?
abduction of wrist (Thumb side)
Opposition vs Reposition
opposition: thumb moves medially to meet other fingers
reposition: thumb back to neutral position
Eversion vs Inversion
Eversion: plantar surface moves to lateral side
Inversion: plantar surface moves to medial side
Dorsiflexion vs plantar flexion?
Dosriflexion: Bending ankle towards shin
Plantar flexion: bending ankle towards back of body
What plane does eversion/ inversion occur in?
Frontal/ coronal plane
What plane does dorsiflexion and plantar flexion occur in?
Sagittal plane
