Lymphatic System (Lecture) Flashcards
Describe the flow of lymph from the upper and lower left quadrant and the lower right quadrant of the body
Lower quadrants go through the cisterna chyli. Then the cisterna chyli and lymphatic vessels from the upper left quadrant empty into the thoracic duct which empties into the L. SCV and L. JV
Describe the flow of lymph for the upper right quadrant of the body
Lymphatic vessels in that quadrant empty into the R. lymphatic duct which empties into the R. SCV and R. JV
What vessel is being emptied and where is it emptying to?

Right Lymphatic duct into right Subclavian Vein
What vessel is being emptied and where is it emptying to?

Thoracic duct into left subclavian vein
What organ is indicated and what is its function?

Peyer’s Patch
- Small masses of lymphatic tissue throughout the ileum
- Monitors intestinal bacteria and prevent overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria

Capsule

Cortex

Germinal Center

Hilum

Medulla

Medullary Cord

Trabecula
What organ is shown, and what are its functions?
Spleen
- Immune Function: remove bloodborne pathogens (White Pulp)
- Remove and destroy aged or defective red blood cells (Red Pulp)

Splenic Capsule

Red Pulp

White Pulp
What organ is shown and what are its functions?

Thymus Gland
- Site where immature lymphocytes develop into T-lymphocytes
- Monitors cancer and intracellular pathogens
- Atrophies with age
What Organs are shown, and what are their functions?

Tonsils
Contain Lots of WBC and stop pathogens from entering through the nose and throat

Pharyngeal Tonsil (Adenoid)
- Ciliated Pseudostratified Columnar ET

Lingual Tonsil
- Non-Keratinized Stratified Squamous ET
- Found near muscular tissue because of tounge

Palatine Tonsil
- Non-Keratinized Stratified Squamous ET
