Articulations (Lecture) Flashcards
Synarthrosis
no movement
Amphiarthrosis
minimal movement
Diarthrosis
Freely moveable
Types of fibrous joints, their articulation, and examples
- Suture-Synarthrotic (e.g. coronal suture)
- Syndesmosis-amphiarthrotic (e.g. tibia and fibula)
- Gomphosis-synarthrotic (e.g. joint between tooth and jaw bone)
What is a suture?
Joint held together w/ very short, interconnecting fibers and bone edges interlock. Only found in the skull
Define Syndesmosis
Joint held together by a ligament
Define gomphosis
peg-in-socket joint. only found in teeth
Types of cartilaginous joints, their articulation, and examples
- Synchondrosis-synarthrotic (e.g. epiphyseal plate)
2. Symphysis-amphiarthrotic (e.g. intervertebral discs)
Define Synchondrosis
Joint where hyaline cartilage unites the bone
Define Symphysis
A joint where fibrocartilage unites the bone
Types of Synovial joints, examples, and their articulations
All are diarthrotic. Most common
- Planar gliding; e.g. intercarpal joints
- Hinge; e.g. elbow joint
- Pivot; e.g. proximal radioulnar joints
- Ellipsoidal/Condyloid; e.g. knuckle joints
- Saddle Joint; carpometacarpal joints of the thumb
- Ball & socket; e.g. shoulder joints
Define flexion and extension
Flexion: decreases angle between bones
Extension: increases angle between bones
Define Hyperextension
Bending a joint backward beyond its normal ROM
Define Abduction and adduction
Abduction: moving a limb away from the body midline
Adduction: Moving limb toward the body midline
Define Rotation
turning movement of a bone around the longitudinal axis
