lower limb nerves Flashcards
1
Q
what are motor nerves?
A
- carry messages to the muscles
2
Q
what do sensory nerves do?
A
- supply sense receptors, action potential back up to spine to pass to brain
3
Q
what happens when nerves are leaving vertical column at levels of lumbar vertebrae?
A
- sacrum converges together to remix the fibres to constitute peripheral nerves
4
Q
A
5
Q
what is a plexus?
A
- branching network of nerves
6
Q
what three nerves form the lumbar plexus?
A
- femoral, obturator and lateral cutaneous
7
Q
what fibres make up the femoral nerve?
A
- made up of fibres from L2,L3 an L4
8
Q
where does femoral nerve travel?
A
- travels on anterior side of the pelvis and thigh
9
Q
what muscles does the femoral nerve innervate?
A
- rectus femoris, sartorius, vastus lateralis
10
Q
what branches off the femoral nerve? what is its role?
A
- saphenous nerve, which supplies skin near the ankle
11
Q
what fibres make up the obturator nerve?
A
- fibres from L2,L3 and L4
12
Q
where does obturator nerve travel?
A
- between ischium and pubis gap; through obturator canal
- down medial side of thigh
13
Q
what is the lateral cutaneous nerve made up of? what nerves does it contain?
A
- fibres from L2 and L3
- only consists of sensory nerves
14
Q
where does lateral cutaneous nerve travel?
A
- goes underneath inguinal ligament before it crosses over hip joint
- goes down onto lateral side of thigh
15
Q
what three nerves make up the lumbosacral plexus?
A
- superior gluteal, inferior gluteal and sciatic
16
Q
what makes up superior gluteal nerve?
A
- arises from L5, S1 and S2
