Lesson 9 Flashcards
eyestrain
discomfort when viewing something
fovea centralis
structure of the eye in the retina, that contains the cones for color vision
glaucoma
increase in interocular eye pressure
hammer (maleus)
a tiny bone found in the middle ear
iris
colored muscular layer surrounding the pupil of the eye
lens
crystal structure for refraction of light rays
macula lutea
a yellow disc in the retina in which the fovea centralis is located
miotic
pertaining to or causing contraction of the pupil
myringotomy
opening to the tympanic membrane
anvil (incus)
middle ear bone or ossicle in a chain of three ossicles in the middle ear
aqueous humor
watery fluid found in anterior chamber of the eye
astigmatism
irregular curvature of cornea or lens
auricle
pinna, or ear flap, of external ear; also atrium of the heart
cataract
condition in which the eye lens becomes opaque
choroid coat
the middle layer of the eye
ciliary body
ligaments that suspend the eye
cochlea
spiral cavity of the internal ear containing the organ of corti
cochlear duct
an endolymph-filled triangular canal containing the spiral organ of corti
color blindness
inability to distinguish colors
cones
structures in the retina of the eye sensitive to bright lights and responsible for color vision
conjunctivitis
an inflammation of conjuctival membranes in the front of the eye
cornea
a clear circular area in the very front of the sclerotic coat
diplopia
double vision
eustachian tube
passageway from throat to middle ear; equalizes pressure
extrinsic muscles
muscles responsible for moving the eye within the orbital socket
rhinitis
inflammation of the lining of the nose
rods
cells in the retina; they are sensitive to dim light
sclera
tough, white covering; part of the external coat of the eye
semicircular canals
structures in the inner ear, involved with equilibrium
stirrup (stapes)
a tiny stirrup shaped bone in the inner ear
sty (hordeolum)
infection of the gland along the eyelid
suspensory ligaments
the ligaments that hold the lens of the eye in place
tinnitus
ringing sensation in one or both ears
tympanic membrane
membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear
umami
one of the five basic tastes; savory taste
amblyopia
dimness of vision
anterior chamber
space between cornea and iris
presbycusis
a condition that causes deafness due to the aging process
presbyopia
farsightedness of advanced age due to loss of elasticity in the lens of the eye
pupil
opening i the iris of the eye for passage of light
retina
innermost layer of the eye; contains the rods and cones
nasal polyp
an abnormal growth that occurs in the sinus cavity
optic disc (blind spot)
an area of the eye devoid of visual reception
organ of Corti
hearing organ
otitis media
an infection of the middle ear
oval window
the membrane that separates the middle ear from the inner ear
posterior chamber
chamber of the eye filled with vitreous humor
vertigo
sensation of dizziness
vitreous humor
transparent, gelatin like substance filling the greater part of the eyeball
accommodation
as it applies to vision, the process by which the ciliary muscle of the eye controls the shape of the lens for vision at near and far distances
cerumen
a waxy or oily substance produced by ceruminous (sebaceous) glands in the lining of the outer ear; also known as ear wax
detached retina
condition that results when the vitreous fluid contracts as it ages, pulling on the retina and causing a tear; detachment of the retina may also occur as the result of an injury
deviated nasal septum
condition in which there is a bend in the cartilage structure of the septum
hyperopia
a condition in which the focal point is beyond the retina; the eyeball is shorter than normal; farsightedness
intrinsic muscles
muscles that help the iris control the amount of light entering the pupil
macular degeneration
thinning of the retinal layer of the eye or leakage that can develop under the retina, disturbing sharp central vision
Meniere’s disease
condition affecting the semicircular canals of the inner ear causing marked vertigo (dizziness)
myopia
condition in which the focal point is in front of the retina; nearsightedness
night blindness
a condition that makes it difficult to see at night, the rod cells in the retina are affected in this condition
otosclerosis
chronic, progressive ear disorder in which the bone in the region of the oval window first becomes spongy and then hardened, causing the stirrup or stapes to become fixed or immobile
strabismus
condition in which the muscles of the eyeballs do not coordinate their action; crossed eyes
nasal polyps
an abnormal growth that occurs in the sinus cavity
