A failure of the heart valves to open properly. Most common in aortic and mitral valves

Vegetations
A
Abnormal tissue growth on valve (fibrin, platelets and bacteria). Right sided in IV drug use, left sided in all others. Streptococci or staph aureus in drug users.

A
Functional pattern: causes
Dilated: idiopathic, alcohol, permpartum, genetic, myocarditis sarcoid
Hypertrophic: genetic, idiopathic, storage disease
Restrictive: Idiopathic, amyloidosis radiation induced, chemo related
