Chronic gastritis
Ongoing inflammation of the stomach mucosa
Can provide an environment for dysplasia and metaplasia
Symptoms include: Upper abdo pain, indigestion/bloating, N+V, belching, loss of appetite/weight loss
Causes: A,B,C and other
H.pylori
Gram -ve bacterium in the stomach, particularly antrum.
Peptic ulcers
Usually occurs in D1 or antrum
Associated with H. pylori and NSAIDs
Complications: bleeding, anemis, massivt haematemsis, perforation leading to peritonitis, long term cancer at edge of ulcer
Oesophageal carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma
Adults over 45, M:F 4:1.
Adenocarcinoma
Linked with barrett’s oesophagus
M:F 7:1
Adenocarcinoma stomach
90% gastric malignancies
2nd commonest malignancy worldwide
Early symptoms resemble gastritis
Small bowel neoplasia
Relatively rare
Adeonocaricnoma, GI stromal tumour, lymphoma, carcinoid (neuroendocrine) tumour
