What are free sugars?
The include MONO/DIsaccharides ADDED to foods/beverages by manufacturer, cook, or consumer and NATURALLY PRESENT sugars in honey, syrups, fruit juices, and fruit juice concentrates
What are intrinsic sugars?
Naturally occurring sugars found in whole, unprocessed foods e.g fruit, vege, dairy, honey, some grains
What are added sugars?
Typically extracted, concentrated, and refined from sugar cane, fruit, coconut, sugar beet, or corn
What does the WHO recommend for free sugar intake?
A decrease of free sugar intake to less than 10% of total energy
What do monosaccharides travel via to get to the liver?
Hepatic portal vein
What does galactose and fructose get converted to in the liver?
Glucose
Where do the issues of lactose intolerance occur in GI?
Large intestine
What are the issues that occur in the LI for lactose intolerance?
- Osmotic shock -> causing diarrhoea
- Methane -> causing flatulence, constipation, bloating
How does NZ fibre consumption compare to reccomendation?
We are consuming less
