Lecture 13 Flashcards
How is overweight and Obesity defined?
As abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health
What is excessive body fat characterised by?
Characterised by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. For an adult this is indicated by a BMI of >30
What are the individual differences in the effect of diabetes/fat on the body
- Amount of excess fat stored
- >BMI is a population index - Distribution of fat
- Associated Health Consequences
What is the equation for BMI?
weight (kg) / height (m2)
What is the correlation of BMI to body fat?
r = 0.8
What area of fat is associated with adverse health effects?
Abdominal
What are the BMI ranges?
<18.50 = underweight
18.50 - 24.90 = healthy weight
>25 = overweight
>30 = obese
Why should we classify levels of obesity?
- Allows comparison of weight status in a population
- Makes groups at increased risk identifiable
- Priorities can be identified for intervention
- Provides basis for evaluation of interventions
What is the prevalence of Obesity in NZ?
-Prevalence has large increase in late adolescence and continues to increase throughout life before decreasing after 70’s
What proportion of NZ is obese/overweight?
70%
Raised MBI is a major risk factor for what NCD’s?
- Cardiovascular disease - mainly heart disease and stroke
- Diabetes - Type 2
- Musculosketal disorders - osteoarthritis
- Some cancers
What can increase CVD risk?
High weight status as a young person
