How is diabetes defined?
As a disease that occurs when blood glucose is too high or when the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired. Results abnormal CHO metabolism and elevated levels of glucose in blood
What cells is insulin produced in?
Beta Cells
What is the body’s main energy source?
Glucose
What is Type 1 diabetes due to?
An autoimmune B-cell distribution leading to insulin deficiency
What are the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes?
- Polydipsia = excessive thirst
- Polyphagia = excessive hunger
- Polyuria = excessive urination
What is Type 2 diabetes due to?
Due to progressive loss of B-cell insulin secretion on background of insulin resistance
What are the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes?
- Polydipsia
- Polyphagia
- Polyuria
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
-In some cases there are no symptoms
In what type of countries is diabetes rising in?
Middle/low income countries
What are the mechanisms to prevent/delay onset of T2 diabetes?
- Healthy diet
- Regular physical activity
- Maintaining normal body weight
- Avoiding tobacco

What is the treatment for T1D?
Insulin
What is the treatment for T2D?
- Medication
