Q

What are the functions of Vit A?

A
  • Eye by maintaining healthy corneas, epithelial cells, mucous membranes, and vision

Q

Describe the 2 roles of Vit A in vision

A
  1. Key component of the visual cycle
    - 11-cis retinal is component of chromophore found in two types of receptor cells. When light hits it is converted from cis->trans
  2. Rod cells
    - chromophore protein part is rhodopsin
    - 100 Million
    - low light intensity
  3. Cone Cells
    - chromophore protein part is iodopsin
    - 3 million
    - Higher light + colour
  4. Health of epithelial cells
    - Retinoic acid
    - Need to keep eye moist

Q

What is the effect of a Vit A deficiency on vision?

A
  • Bitot’s spot and night blindness

- If not picked up then can lead to permanent blindness

17
Q

What is keratinism?

A
  • Too much keratin
  • Vit A deficiency symptom
  • Changes in epithelial cells result in keratinisation and rough/dry skin
18
Q

What is Vit A deficiency a risk factor for?

A
  • Severe measles
  • An oral does of Vit A for 2x days is given where deficiency is present
  • > more than 1/3 kids who need this don’t get it
19
Q

Describe the toxicity of Vit A

A
  • Can occur from concentrated amounts of pre-formed Vit A
  • Symptoms:
  • > birth defects (acts as teratogen)
  • > discolouration of skin from beta-carotene
