what was the Personality and CompatibilityKelly & Conley, 1987 Study
50 year study of 300 engaged couples who were to be married in 1938.
Personality rated by five acquaintances who knew them well.
Reconfigure and Reduce to the Big 5
Many non-personality variables also assessed*
Followed up first five years, then after 20 and 50 years.
Key Outcomes: Divorce; Satisfaction in Marriage.

high introverted (submissive), high quarrelsome men contempt to stay in unhappy marriages (low on agreeableness) because they LIKE fighting

no evidence people actually look for similarity
why is there a difference of similarity of couples old and young
by being with someone a ling time you become more similar
were studies done to see if the big 5 could predict success in work place
150 studies examined the validity of personality measures for personnel selection purposes between 1950 and 1990.
Studies used a diverse and confusing array of scales.
Results can be reorganized by adopting the Big 5 framework.
what was the outcome criteria for the studies about big 5 and workplace outcome
Training Proficiency
Job proficiency
Objective Outcomes (tenure, promotion, salary)
what trait predicts how well someone will do at ANY job
conscientiousness
do any of the other traits (EONA) predict success in a job
Extraversion for select jobs.
Openness for certain outcomes (training proficiency– about learning what mission of company is and applying it)
No reliable findings for N and A.
what is grit
consciousness:
Working strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and interest over years despite failure, adversity, and plateaus
in progress.
The gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon;
His or her advantage is stamina. Whereas disappointment or boredom signals to others that it is time to change trajectory and cut losses, the gritty individual stays the course.
caveat of this lecture
Natural to begin by trying to pin down our profile.
There is more nuance to the Big Five than I have described.
There can be change across situations and over time.
There is more to personality than the Big 5.
Our Big 5 profile isn’t what is most unique (or important) about us.
