Lecture 3 - Sport Injury Prevention Flashcards
What are the most common sport related injuries?
LE injuries (knee and ankle)
Concussions
Why is sport injury prevention important?
1 in every 3 youth in Canada seek medical attention for sport related injury every year and there are many other consequences that come with sport injuries:
- reduced participation in sport
- reduced physical activity
- missed school/work time
- increased work for subsequent injury
-weight gain and obesity
- early post traumatic osteoarthritis
- psychosocial consequences
health care and indirect costs are high
What are 4 key points of Van Mechelen’s Model? Explain each briefly
- Establish the extent of the injury problem (what are common injuries? how severe?)
- Find mechanisms and risk factors (how these injuries occur, understand the change of events, the patterns)
- Introduce preventative measure
- Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention
What are the 3 levels of prevention? Explain each.
Primary: reduce occurrence (prevention of first-time injury)
Secondary: early diagnosis (provide appropriate treatment)
tertiary: minimize consequences (rehab)
What are some major sport injury prevention strategies?
- training strategies: programs to improve fitness/movement quality (training load)
- new or modified sport equipment
- new or modified rules
What is neuromuscular training?
Training that trains the nerves and the muscles to react and communicate.
What are components of NMT?
- balance training
- proprioceptive training
- coordination
- agility drills
- plyometrics
- strength training
What are the aims of NMT?
- improve neuromuscular training control and joint stability
- improve movement skills and technique
- enhance performance
- reduce the risk of injury
