Lecture 14 - Doping in sport Flashcards
What is WADA?
World anti-doping agency
harmonizes anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sport organizations and among public authorities around the world
How many mandatory international standards and mandatory guidlines are there?
Standars - 8
Guidelines - 12
What are some WADA activites?
- code compliance monitoring
- education
- research
- list of prohibited substance and methods
- TUE
- athlete outreach
- cooperation with law enforcement and anti-doping organizations
What are some antidoping violations?
- presence of prhibited substance, metabolites or markers in sample
- use or attempted use of prohibited substance or method
- evading, refusing or failing to submit samples
- whereabouts failures
- tampering or attempted tempering with doping control
- possesion
- complicity
- association
Doping control
Who can get tested?
- national or international athletes
- in sports with high doping risk
- university level
- within 18 months after retiring
How do athletes get selected for testing?
- finishing position
- random slection
-targeted testing
Who can be a part of targeted testing?
- injury
- withdrawal or absence form expected competition
- going in or coming out of retirement
- behviour indicating doping
- sudden major imporvement in performance
When do athletes get tested?
can be in-competition or out-of compeition anywhere or anytime (have to submit there whereabouts)
What is tested?
Blood and urine (looking for biomarkers not just subsatnce)
What are 3 biomarkers used in testing?
- hematological: detects blood doping
- steroidal: detects anabolic doping
- endocrinological: detects growth factor doping
What is TUE?
therapeutic use exemption (authorizes the use of prohibited substances if they need to take them)
What would require a TUE?
- insulin for type I diabetes
- diruetic for high BP
- stimulant for ADHD
What is CCES?
Canada centre for ethics in sport
What are some things prohibited in and out of competition?
things that have long term effects that enhance perofrmance in training and competition
- anabolic agents
- hormones, growth factors
- beta-2 agonists
- homorne and metabolic modulators
- diretics and other masking agents
- enhancement of oxygen transfer (blood doping)
- gene doping
- stimulants
- narcotics
- cannabinoids
- glucocorticoids
What are prohibited in competition only?
no long term enhancing effects, but advantageous in competition
- stimulants (epinephrine)
- narcotics
- cannabinoids
- glucocortisosteroids
