What is the Ottawa ankle rule? Briefly describe.

A

Palpating to see if there is a fracture. A positive test is tenderness with palpation

  • along posterior edge of lateral malleolus
  • along posterior edge of medial malleolus
  • base of 5th metatarsal
  • navicular
  • inability to weight bear immediately after injury, and 4 steps during initial evaluations

What are the tests for an ankle sprain?

A
  • anterior draw test (hold just above ankle, pull heel foward)
  • talar tilt test (inversion for lateral sprain, eversion for medial sprains
  • kleiger test (hold tibia and fibula, foot and dorsiflexion, externally rotate foot)

Explain the inversion talar tilt test.

A

Hold distal tibia and fibula by applying a posterior pressure. second hand holds calcaneus.

ATFL - foot is into 20 degrees of plantar flexion and inverted
CFL - foot in neutral position and inverted
PTFL - foot is dorsiflexed and inverted
