Lecture 2 - SEM and Risk Management Flashcards
What does SEM stand for?
Sport and Excersise Medical Team
What is another name for SEM team?
integrated support team (IST)
What is a SEM team?
a multidisciplinary team of sport science, sport medicine and sport performance professionals
What is the goal of a SEM team?
to ensure athletes are healthy, fit and mentally ready for optimal performance
What are some professionals that can be found on a SEM team?
- physician
- therapist
- strength and conditioning coach
- exercise physiologist
- sport psychologist
- biomechanist
- nutritionist
What are the 3 steps to identifying risks?
- Assessment
- Evaluation
- Control
At what levels do we need to consider risk managment?
- within/across sport
- club/team level
- individual level
Explain risk assessment:
process of measurement/estimation of risks to teams and athletes
Explain risk evaluation:
involves determining the significance and acceptability of the risks (severity)
Explain risk control:
identifying and implementing methods to control the risk and the consequences (what are the risk factors? how to prevent/control?
What are the elements of a risk management program? Briefly explain each one.
- injury surveillance (systematic way to record injuries)
- season analysis (look at season beforehand to identify risk periods)
- Preseason screening (find athletes who may have a higher risk for injury or illness - fitness test)
- monitoring ‘at-risk’ team members
- RTS (decision should be agreed upon by all SEM team members
- Education (make sure everyone is on same page)
- Equipment and facilities (ensure they are safe)
- EAP (be prepared)
What is risk compensation?
describing a possible change in an athlete when they use protective equipment. (theory: when we start using protective measure, we increase risk)
What does EAP stand for?
Emergency action plan
What is needed for an EAP?
- charge person
- call person
- first aid kit
- AED
- ambulation aid
What is SOAP?
Method of documentation:
S - subjective info/history (symptoms, what athlete says)
O - objective info (what we observe
A - assessment (what we need to do)
P - plan
