Lecture 21 Flashcards
Describe Triplett’s Social Facilitation Research
- Children would work either alone or in pairs
- Results were classified based on stimulation
1. Positive stimulation = faster in a pair
2. Little stimulation = same effect as positive but smaller
3. Overstimulation = performed worse in the presence of other - Study didn’t have statistical comparison but the effect was later confirmed
Describe the Yerkes-Dodson Law
-U Shaped relationship for medium/difficult tasks in terms of performance
According to Yerkes-Dodson Law, as the task gets lower what happens to the optimal stimulation level?
Optimal stimulation shifts lower as the task gets harder
Describe the ‘Trickle-Down’ Model
-Says to invest the most in top level athletes and the effect will ‘trickle down’ to the whole population by motivating others to be like them
What are the limitations of the ‘Trickle-Down’ Model
- Money
- Interest and Talent
- Location
- Sports structure
- Support Network
Describe the Pyramid Model
-Broad base of physical education and community support will increase performance at top levels
What are the limitations of the Pyramid Model?
- Mass participation doesn’t equal increased performance by athletes
- The model sets to push out people at each level
Describe the Inclusion Model
- Focusses on sport at different ages/stages/level of performance
- Can move through the path in different ways to reach the same goal
- Reduces stress pressure on younger children
