Lecture 15 Flashcards
What is educational psychology about?
How people learn, especially in a formal education setting
What is the aim of educational psyc?
To improve educational processes and outcomes
What do educational psyc practitioners need to understand?
The education system and what techniques work for specific age levels/contexts
What is the role of an educational psyc practitioner?
- Help parents
- Deal with social problems e.g. family changes, social group changes
What four dimensions does McInerney’s model emphasise?
- Cognitive e.g memory
- Behavioural i.e observable behavioural change
- Social Cognitive theory e.g. modelling behaviour
- Humanism - learning as a personal act, how students feel about the process of learning
What are Judgements of Learning?
Metacognitive assessments of understanding and ability to recall
Describe the Cue Utilisation Hypothesis and the three cues that affect JoL
- Extrinsic - relates to the context in which you are learning
- Intrinsic - cues about how easy it is to learn the material
- Mnemonic - Extrinsic and Intrinsic combined together, our sense of how well we are able to recall material
-In the experiment, JoL was a good indication of performance, performance was better than predicted and the lines follow the general trend.
There are three types of assessment, what are they?
- Learning = testing on exactly what was taught
- New transfer = not the same as what was learnt, but similar (standard testing)
- Far transfer = taking context and generalise to new context, most useful in the real world
When looking at Evidence Based Learning, what factors are taken into account?
- Generalisability to other learning contexts
- Testing Methods i.e free recall or problem solving
- Student Characteristics i.e IQ level, kids vs adults
- Learning Conditions/environment e.g. group work or individual work
What practice testing methods are considered the most effective?
A combination of practice testing and distributed practice
What practice testing methods have moderate utility?
- Interleaved practice - schedule that mixes different kinds of materials in the same study session
- Elaborative interrogation - justifying answers
- Self explanation - explaining how new information is related to known information
What practice testing methods have the lowest utility?
- Highlighting
2. Rereading
What practice testing methods are effective but not for all material/learners?
- Keyword mnemonic - keywords/mental imagery to associate verbal materials
- Imagery for text - forming mental images for the text
- Summarisation
