Lecture 15- Polio a "picornaviridae-enterovirus" Flashcards
Which antibody is more frequently made then all the other antibody types COMBINED?!
IgA
What are the two functions of IgA?
1.Block colonization 2.Neutralize (toxin)
What is all over our intestinal tract that IgA is resistant to?
Proteases!
What type of vaccine is the salk polio vaccine? How is it administered? Does it produce IgA?
KILLED..All killed vaccines administered by shots. It does not produce IgA
What type of vaccine is the saban vaccine? How is it administered? Does it produce IgA?
attenuated…all attenuated vaccines admisitered orally. yes, it does produce IgA
Why does Saban produce IgA while Salk does not?
Saban infects the gut epithelium, sparking the production of sIgA’s!!
What about the Saban makes it very beneficial for developing countries?
the ATTENUATED virus can be passed on in a close community via fecal-oral transmission!
Does the poliovirus need to code for a nucleotide polymerase? Does it need to bring one with it?
1.Yes-it does need to code for an RNA polymerase to make more RNA from RNA. 2.No-it does not need to bring its own. The host cell will read the (+) ssRNA just like it was mRNA.
Is poliovirus enveloped or non-enveloped?
Non-enveloped
How is poliovirus transmitted?
Fecal-Oral
Where does polio enter the body?
Oral cavity
What is the main location where polio replicates?
the G.I. tract, hence “ENTEROVIRUS”
What type of neurons and where in the CNS does poliovirus attack?
Motor Neurons in the Spinal Cord
What percentage of people are Asymptomatic after contracting polio? What percentage of people become paralyzed?
95% aysmptomatic! less then 1% paralytic!
What are the reseviors for poliovirus?
humans only! ha tricked ya!
