Lab techniques Flashcards
lab procedure used to amplify desired DNA fragment
useful in Dx (neonatal HIV, herpes encephalitis)
PCR
what does reverse transcriptase PCR do
detects and quantities mRNA levels in a sample
reverse transcriptase creates complementary DNA template that is amplified via standard PCR
Southwestern blot identifies
DNA binding proteins using dsDNA probes
c-Jun
c-Fos (leucine zipper motif)
technique to assess size, granularity, and protein expression (immunophenotype) of individual cells in a sample
Flow cytometry
Commonly used for hematologic abnormalities
- leukemia
- paroxysmal hemoglobinuria
- fetal RBC in mothers blood
- immunodeficiencies (CD4 count in HIV)
Flow cytometry
used to profile gene expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously to study certain diseases and treatments
microarrays
immunologic test to detect presence of other specific antibody or antigen in blood sample
ELISA
can have high SN and SP but less SP than Western Blot
Can detect microdeletions, translocations, duplications with
FISH
