Lab quiz: Food Microbiology Flashcards
heterophic plate count or (aerobic plate count)
determine the number of viable miccroorganisms on a sample
colony-forming units (CFUs)
used to count the number of viable cells in a bacterial stock
What are some limitations of the heterophic plate count?
1.) the media used is not selective, which means that many types of microorganisms can grow (including those that are not pathogenic as well as some yeasts and molds)
2.) the environment used to culture the assay plates may be unfavorable for the growth of certain organisms (such as strict anaerobes)
pour plate method
a common technique used to determine microbial counts in a liquid sample
TNTC
Too numerous to count (range is from 25-250, over 250 means it’s TNTC)
