Periodontal Disease
-destruction of bond
-teeth fall out
-The initial stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, the signs of which are swelling, loss of normal gingival contour, patches of redness, and increased bleeding of the gingiva
Mumps (virus)
-infects the parotid salivary glands
-respiratory transmission; syncytia formation
-swollen salivary, fever, pain when swallowing
-meningitis, pancreatitis, deafness, damage to testes and ovaries
-does have vaccination
-common to see outbreaks in adults, because it’s been a minute for the vaccine
Gastritis and Gastric Ulcers
-Helicobacter pylori
-peptic ulcer disease-cancer
-decreasing incidence; increased acid reflux and asthma?
Acute Diarrheal diseases
-more common in children
-in developing countries- a major source of mortality or permanent effects
-in USA- most likely from contaminated food
Acute diarrhea (Salmonella)
-primarily salmonella enterica (multiple serotypes)
-motile G-rod
-diarrhea, cramps, fever, nausea-typically resolved in 2-5 days
-septic shock
-salmonella common in chicken
Typhoid fever
-salmonella enterica serotype Typhi
-most virulent
-fever and headache; diarrhea in 2nd or 3rd week
-progressive invasive infection that leads to septicemia
-typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi
Shigellosis (Bacillary Dysentery)
-shigella sp.
-infects intestinal mucosa causing inflammatory response
-enterotoxin damages mucosa and villi
-nausea, diarrhea, cramps, fever, possible bloody diarrhea (dysentery)
-person to person transmission (fecal oral)
-Shigella dysenteriae produces shiga toxin
