L17B: Feedback Guide Flashcards
What are the 2 ways to measure feedback frequency to
assess how often to give feedback?
- Absolute Frequency
- Total number of feedback presentations
- Relative Frequency
- % of trials in which FB given
Abs. 5
Relative: 20%
Example
Task: Using a joystick to track a repeating pattern
What is the Guidance Hypothesis?
Guidance hypothesis relates to a failure to properly process intrinsic feedback
Guidance Hypothesis: “Learner can become dependent on augmented feedback if it diverts attention away from discovering how to accomplish the task goal when augmented feedback no longer given.”
The No-KR retention test is critical for testing for dependency
When does Guidance FB occur?
(1) provided too frequently
(2) concurrent with performance
(3) provided too quickly after a practice attempt
What is Bandwidth feedback?
Bandwidth feedback (FB) is a useful method to reduce feedback. Only give FB when errors fall outside ‘band’
What 3-reasons explain why bandwidth feedback is more effective than feedback every trial?
- Good for motivation as the learner is “correct” more often (getting less error feedback)
- Good for stability. Not trying to correct/adjust on every trial.
*Correcting small errors from trial to trial can be harmful, especially as a novice you don’t have the motor proficiency to yet control those errors
- Good for preventing dependency.
Frequency of feedback decreased (faded schedule).
40%
When is the best time to give FB?
What is the optimal Feedback delay interval?
What is the problem with FB given after
short intervals?
