Part Practice
What are the 3 common
part practice techniques?
- Fractionation
- Segmentation /chaining
- Simplification
note only the first 2 involve breaking the skill into parts
What is Fractionation?
one or more parts of a skill are practiced separately
(just ball toss, just legs butterfly)
Practice different parts of a skill separately before practicing entire skill as a whole (playing piano w/ 1 hand at a time)
What is Segmentation /chaining?
Order matters. One part of the skill is practiced, then next part added etc, until the entire skill is practiced (gymnastic vault)
What is Simplification?
complexity of some aspect of the skill is reduced (lower net).
Reduce difficulty/ attentional demands, without changing movement goal. Whole skill is simplified
This is not about breaking a skill down into parts – but about dealing w/ whole task complexity by simplification. It is a common method & is often considered a part-practice method.
What are Examples of Simplification?
i. Reduce object difficulty
ii. Reduce speed
iii. Sequencing skill progressions
iv. Simulators and virtual reality
v. Physical guidance
Comparing fractionation and segmentation
of a skill, “ABCD”
Simplification
What is Sequencing Skill Progressions?
Simplification iii): Sequencing Skill Progressions, from
simple to complex until skill being learned is practiced
Simplification
What are Simulators and VR?
What are the Two important components for simulations in
order to get good transfer back to the goal task?
- Physical fidelity: Degree to which surface features of a simulation and goal task match.
- Psychological fidelity: degree to which behaviours in a simulator match behaviours required by goal task.
Simplification
What is Physical Guidance?
Learner is physically assisted through a task/ skill (simplification)
– Learning new (and unfamiliar) skills
– Re-learning correct movement patterns after
injury (Re-gaining function in hemiparetic arm)
