being deprived due to the lack of norms and values
what is RESTRICTED CODE?
the working class speak with colloquial language with non-standard grammar
what is ELABORATE CODE?
the middle/upper class speak with complex sentence structures & standard grammar
what is IMMEDIATE GRATIFICATION?
the act of demanding pleasure now rather than waiting for better quality rewards later
what is FATALISM?
the attitude of mind, which accepts whatever happens as being bound to happen (dependent on luck)
what is COLLECTIVISM?
a worldwide view in which social behaviour is guided largely by goals that are shared by a collective
what is PRESENT TIME ORIENTATION?
seeing the present as more important than the future, so have no long-term goals
what is the MYTH OF CULTURAL DEPRIVATION?
a child can’t be deprived of their own culture, but the working class are at a disadvantage by discrimination from the middle class dominanated education system
what is COMPENSATORY EDUCATION?
aims to tackle cultural deprivation by providing extra funds & resources to schools in deprived areas
what is SURE START?
creating high-quality learning environments to improve children’s ability to learn and for parents to support them
what is POOR HOUSING?
housing that’s in poor condition or situated in a high density area e.g. overcrowding
what us DIET AND HEALTH?
young people from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins & minerals
