Introduction to GI physiology Flashcards
what are the intrinsic neurons of the GI tract?
ENS neurons - motor, sensory, associative, interofugal
what are the extrinsic neurons of the GI tract?
sympathetic, parasympathetic, sensory input
what is the role of dopamine in the ENS?
inhibitory - inhibits ENS neuronal firing
what is the role of serotonin in the ENS?
excitatory - induces vasodilation, increases smooth muscle contraction, stimulates secretion
what is the role of Ach in the GI tract?
excitatory - induces vasodilation, increases smooth muscle contraction, stimulates secretion
what is the role of NO and VIP in the GI tract?
inhibitory - smooth muscle relaxation
what factors increase vasodilation of the GI tract?
PNS, NTs such as NO / VIP, low oxygen, hyperosmolarity
what factors decrease blood flow to the GI tract?
SNS innervation of vascular smooth muscle (NE, a-adrenergic receptors)
