Anterior and posterior pituitary Flashcards
Which hormones are made in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary?
ADH and oxytocin
Where are the posterior pituitary hormones made?
Supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of hypothalamus
What are the differences between GH and IGFs?
GH - short half life (IGFs - long half life)
Where is GH produced? IGFs?
- Somatotropes of anterior pituitary 2. Liver
What is the stimulus for the milk let down reflex?
Release of oxytocin in response to infant suckling
How does GH impact bone growth?
Stimulates osteoblasts
What is POMC?
Propriomelanocortin - becomes hydrolyzed to form ACTH
What is the main effect of ACTH?
Stimulation of cortisol synthesis and secretion
What is the defect in neurogenic diabetes insipidus?
Hypothalamus or connection between hypothalamus and posterior pituitary (production or release of ADH) - large amounts of dilute urine produced since ADH cannot cause production of concentrated urine
What is the defect in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus?
Kidneys (eg V2 receptor on collecting ducts, aquaporin insertion)
