Introduction Flashcards
What are the four themes throughout this class?
-Nutrients
-Nutrient Metabolism
-Feeds
-Requirements (meeting needs of the animal)
What is animal nutrition?
The study of nutrient requirements, absorption, metabolism, diet formulation and feeding management for animal health.
What is nutrient?
Essential for growth, maintenance and repair of an animal’s body.
What is digestion?
Process by which food is broken down into smaller components that can be absorbed by the body.
What is metabolism?
Chemical process occurs in animals to maintain life.
-ATP
-heat generated process
-“burning”
What does each nutrient provide?
-Carbohydrate
-Protein
-Lipids
-Vitamins
-Minerals
-Water
-Carbohydrates: energy
-Proteins: structure and enzyme factors
-Lipids: energy
-Vitamins: cofactors
-Minerals: Structure and signaling
-Water: solvent, body temp, and moves things
What is a requirement?
Amount of nutrition that an animal needs for health and productivity.
-it’s a quantity
What is feed?
A single nutrition component or ingredient provided to a animals.
What is feed composition?
Nutritional context that animals consume.
What is food processing?
Methods used to prepare feed for animals.
What are Food Additives?
Substances added to feed to improve nutritional value or prevent disease.
What are feeds used for?
To prepare diets for animals to meet requirements.
What are the types of digestion and metabolism?
-Ruminant
-Non-ruminant
What is a ruminant?
An animal with a four chambered stomach that is able to digest tough plant material.
What is a non-ruminant?
An animal with a single chambered stomach that is unable to digest tough plant material.
