what is it?
several conditions that affect gas transfer, most of which cause progressive scarring of lung tissue
what causes ILD?
long term exposure to toxins due to occupation, medication, autoimmune disease and can be idiopathic
what toxins cause ILD?
asbestos fibres, silica dust, grain dust, animal and bird droppings, radiation treatment and indoor hot tubs
what type of medication cause ILD?
chemotherapy drugs, some antibiotics, some heart meds and some anti-inflammatory drugs
what are the symptoms of ILD?
shortness of breath, abnormal breathing sounds, abnormal CXR or HRCT, dry cough
what are the investigations of ILD?
spirometry, DLCO, HRCT, Tissue biopsy, CXR
what will the spirometry look like for someone with an ILD?
it’ll show a restrictive pattern
what will the DLCO be like for someone with an ILD?
decreased
what will be seen on the HRCT of someone with an ILD?
reticulonodular fibrotic shadowing worse at the lung bases and periphery, traction bronchitis and honey combing
what type of biopsy I done for someone with an ILD?
trans bronchial biopsy and thoracoscopic biopsy
what is shown on a CXR of someone with an ILD?
bilateral infiltrates
what is the treatment for an ILD?
depends on the ILD
