Intermolecular Forces 2.2.2 Flashcards
What are Intermolecular Forces?
Weak forces of attraction between neighbouring molecules.
What causes Intermolecular Forces?
Small areas of charged dipoles
What does it mean if an atom is
monatomic?
The atoms exists on their own
What does it mean if an atom is Diatomic?
The atoms exist in pairs
What are London Forces?
Induced dipole-dipole forces
What causes London Forces?
The uneven distribution of electrons within an atom.
∴ creating uneven charge
∴ influencing the neighbouring atoms to have uneven distribution, due to the uneven charge
What is a Permenant Dipole?
Forces of attraction between polar molecules
What is Electronegativity?
A measure of attraction of an atom in a covelant molecule for the bonding pair of electrons
What is Hydrogen Bonding?
Strong dipole-dipole forces when H, N, O and F atoms are interacting with H
More electron causes larger what?
larger induced dipoles
Why are Induced Dipoles temporary?
The electrons redistribute to an even charge
Can Polar Bonds exist on non-polar molecules?
Yes
but they are equaled out by another polare bond (such as in CO(2))
What are the effects of Hydrogen Bonding?
DNA letter pairs are held together by H bonds (G≡C and A=T)
Ice forms a crystaline lattice due to the polarity of molecules aligning with each other.
High surface tension of water
