Equilibrium 1 3.2.3 Flashcards
Define Dynamic Equilibrium?
When the forwards and reverse reaction occur at the same rate in a closed system
What are characteristics of Dynamic Equilibrium?
Rates of forwards and reverse reactions are equal.
It is in a closed system (nothing is added, nothing is removed).
Concentrations remain constant
What is the Le Chatelier Principle?
When a system in dynamic equilibrium is subject to change the system will adjust to minimise change
What is the Haber Process?
The process used in the production of Ammonia
What is the equation of the Haber Process?
N2 + 3H2 →2NH3
What conditions maximise the Haber Process and why?
High Pressure:
Fewer moles of gas on the RHS
Low Temperature:
Forwards reacton is Exothermic
What conditions does industry use for the Haber Process and why?
High Pressure: 200000kPa (200atm) As fewer moles of gas on the RHS Medium Temperature: 400-450 Celcius As reaction is faster to maximise production Iron Catalyst: Offers alternative reaction path
