Group 2 3.1.2 Flashcards
What happens to Atomic Radius in group 2?
Atomic radius increases down group 2
Whay does the Atomic Radius change in group 2?
There is a greater amount of sheilding down group two due to the increased number of sbu-shells
What trend does the Ionisation of group 2 elements follow?
Ionisation energy decreases down group 2.
This is due to the attraction between the nucleus and electrons being weaker due to being further away.
As well as a greater amount of shielding
What happens to Reactivity in group 2?
Reactivity increases down the group
Why does Reactivity increase down group 2?
It is easier to remove electrons from the atom when there is a low ionisation energy
How does group 2 react with Oxygen?
Metal + Oxygen → Metal Oxide
eg. 2Ca + O2 →2CaO
How does group 2 react with Water?
Metal + Water → Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen
eg. Ca + 2(H2O) → Ca(OH)2 + H2
What is the trend of solubility of group 2 hydroxides?
Solubility of group 2 hydroxides increase down group 2.
Because there are more OH- in the solution
What is Thermal Decomosition of a group 2 Carbonate?
Group 2 carbonate → Metal Oxide + Carbon Dioxide
eg. CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
What is the reaction between group 2 oxides and water?
Metal Oxide + Water → Metal Hydroxide
eg. CaO + H20 → Ca(OH)2
What are uses of group 2 hydroxides?
Calcium Hydroxide is used to neutralise soil PH
Magnesium Hydroxide is used to relive indigestion, it neutralises stomach acid
