TCAS: What are the 4 TCAS symbols?

A

Black diamond: more than 6nm OR above 1200ft. Not a threat

White diamond: Within 6nm AND below 1200ft. Not a threat

Yellow circle: “traffic, traffic”, time to CPA 35-45 sec. not advised to deviate. Pilots look for the aircraft.

Red square: “climb or descend”, time to CPA 25-35 sec. Authorized to deviate. Stop looking for the aircraft.

You will react but they will not avoid. They are not equipped with avoidance maneuvers. Mode C has altitude, bearing and range information.

What happens if in a TCAS RA situation, the other aircraft only has Mode A in their transponder?

A

Mode A has no altitude information. Only bearing and range. Mode S will assume that Mode A is the same altitude as you, but only give traffic advisories. No RA.
