GPWS Flashcards
What does EGPWS stand for?
Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System
What is the difference between GPWS and EGPWS?
- GPWS does not have forward looking capability. Radar based terrain detection.
- EGPWS has forward looking terrain capability. Data base based and not radar based.
How do the pilots monitor each ILS’s information?
Both EFIS must display Rose Nav to see the others ILS
Captain PFD (ILS 1), ND (ILS 2) & FO PFD (ILS 2), ND (ILS 1)
Purpose of the GPWS?
Enhance safety by alerting crew to:
- Terrain collisions
- Incorrect aircraft configurations
Will the GPWS be overridden when there is a stall or windshear warning?
Yes
Can the GPWS prevent an impact with a clear, vertical cliff face?
No. GPWS has no forward looking capability
How does the EGPWS compute for terrain?
FMGS position with Terrain database
Which PB in the GPWS controls the basic GPWS system and which controls the Enhanced “looking forward” part of the EGPWS?
- SYS - controls the basic GPWS sys
2. TERR - controls the Enhanced ”Looking Forward” section
What are the 5 basic modes for GPWS?
Mode 1 - excessive rate of descent: “sink rate”
Mode 2 - excessive terrain closure: “terrain terrain, pull up”
Mode 3 -altitude loss after take off: “don’t sink”
Mode 4 - unsafe terrain clearance & not in landing configuration: “too low (terrain, gear, flaps)”
Mode 5 - descent is below the glide slope: “glide slope”
When the Terr PB on the is pressed, what is displayed on the ND when both Terrain and Weather data is on?
Terrain
If Terr (EGPWS) fails, do you lose Sys (basic mode 1-5 GPWS) as well?
No. The two systems are separate.
What is the GPWS warning for high rate of descent at low level. What if the rate becomes excessive?
- “Sink rate, sink rate”
2. Excessive: woop, woop, pull up!
What do the colors stand for in Terrain?
- Red
- Amber
- Green
- Light green
- Purple
- Yellow
- Black
- Red - up to 2,000’ above us
- Amber - up to 1,000’ above us
- Green - 1,000’ below us
- Light green - 2,000’ below us
- Purple - unkown area
- Yellow - less 1,000’ above and less 1,000’ below
- Black is water
What is the GPWS warning if rising ground is detected and if also the warning has been repeated twice?
- Terrain, Terrain
2. After Terrain warning has been repeated twice, Woop, Woop, Pull Up!
If the GPWS detects a rate of descent after an initial climb or following a go around, what is the GPWS warning?
Don’t Sink, Don’t Sink
