Melioidiosis
A
Rare infection caused by gram-negative Burkholderia pseudomallei. Endemic to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Northern Australia.

S&S melioidosis
A
- Pneumonia (bilateral opacities)
- Skin ulcers/ abscessed (purple colored lesions)
- Organ abscesses (kidney, prostate, sleep and liver)
Severe disease seen in DM, alcoholics, CKD, chronic lung disease

Diagnosis of Melioidosis
A
Culturing samples from mucous membranes, blood, sputum, skin ulcers and organ abscesses.
Gram-negative rods with bipolar staining and safety pin appearance

Tx
A
Ceftazidime or carbapenem for acute infection.
Followed by months of TMP-SMX for eradication
