Infection Prevention and Control Flashcards
Why is infection prevention and control important?
To ensure the safety of those being cared for, staff and visitors in the care environment
What are the 6 links in the chain of infection?
- The infectious agent
- The reservoir
- Means of exit
- The mode of transmission
- Means of entry
- The susceptible host
Infectious Agent
Micro-organism with the capacity to cause disease ( bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, prions)
Reservoir
Where the micro-organism can exist and reproduce (usually somewhere warm, moist and with food source)
Means of exit
Escaping the reservoir:
- Excretions (faeces, vomit)
- Secretions (saliva, droplets)
- Skin (skin scales)
Mode of Transmission
how micro-organism is transported from one site to another
Means of Entry
Entering the host
Susceptible host
Person unable to resist the invading micro-organism
How is a HAI defined?
Any infection that occurs 48 hours or more after a patient has been admitted to hospital
What is the impact of HAI on humans?
Increased morbidity
Hospital stay
Long term disability
Unnecessary deaths
When are the 5 moments for hand hygiene?
- before patients contact
- before aseptic task
- after body fluid removal
- after patient contact
- after contact with patient surroundings
What is classed as a low risk body fluid?
Saliva
Stool
Urine
Vomit
