Infection Control Flashcards
What does PPE stand for?
Personal protective equipment
What are microorganisms?
Small living bodies that are not visible to the naked eye.
Difference between pathogens and nonpathogens?
Pathogens cause disease while nonpathogens help maintain body process.
What are some classes of microorganisms?
Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites
What are bacteria?
One-celled microorganisms that are classified by shape.
What are spores?
Preserve genetic material and help bacteria survive harsh environments.
What are parasites?
Organisms that live on or in an organism of a different species.
What are some types of parasites?
Protozoa, helminths, ectoparasites.
What are fungi?
Plant-like microorganisms that can be found in the air, soil, plants or water.
How many type of fungi are there?
There are million of types.
What are viruses?
The smallest type of microorganism. Made up of only a few molecules.
What do viruses do?
Invade host cells where they take nutrients required to multiply.
Endogenous infection is when?
Microorganism, or pathogen, in the human body.
Exogenous infection is when?
Microorganism, or pathogen, entering the human body from the outside environment.
Nosocomial infection is when?
Acquired by a person while in healthcare setting.
Opportunistic occurs when?
When the body’s defense are weak.
What is a communicable disease?
A type of infectious disease that can be transmitted from one person to another.
Are all infectious diseases communicable?
No.
Name the chain of infection by order.
Infectious agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry, susceptible host.
What are the two modes of transmission?
Direct and indirect transmission.
Is droplets direct or indirect transmission?
Direct.
Define Asepsis.
A condition that is free of pathogens.
What is the highest level of asepsis?
Sterilization.
What are methods of sterilization?
Steam, dry heat, chemical solution.
What is the middle level of asepsis?
Disinfection.
What is the number one way to prevent the spread of infection?
Hand cleansing.
What is the lowest level of asepsis?
Cleaning.
