Diabetes Flashcards
Define Diabetes
A metabolic disease that causes high blood glucose (blood sugar)
What is the body’s main source of energy?
Blood glucose
What are the 3 types of diabetes?
Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational diabetes
Define Insulin
A hormone that regulates blood sugar levels.
What are the etiology (causes) of each diabetes?
Type1, the body doesn’t produce insulin. Type 2, the body doesn’t use insulin properly. Gestational, pregnancy hormones block the mother’s insulin from functioning.
What are some risk factors for each type of diabetes?
Type 1-childhood diet, viruses, cold climates.
Type 2-genetics, lifestyle.
Gestational-advanced age, obesity, hypertension.
Define Pre-Diabetes
Where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed with diabetes
Identify the symptoms of diabetes.
Fatigue, blurry vision, nausea, darkening of skin crease areas, weight loss, constant urination, thirst, and hunger.
How is diabetes diagnosed?
Testing such as A1C, urine, blood sugar and oral glucose tolerance.
What are some treatments for diabetes?
Dieting, exercising, treatment-monitoring (CGM/Glucometer), treatment-medication (oral medication/Insulin/surgery)
How does lifestyle affect the disease?
Having a healthier lifestyle lowers the chances of diabetes and maintains blood sugar levels, insulin and weight.
What is Prognosis for Diabetes?
Diabetes patients can live healthy, happy lives if they follow the diabetic diet and medication regimen prescribed by their doctor.
