Define Asthma
A respiratory condition that affects the lungs making it difficult to breathe.
Define Bronchi
They are the main airways to the lungs.
Define Allergy-Induced Asthma
Asthma that is triggered by an outdoor or indoor allergen such as pollen, pet hair or dust.
Define Non-Allergic Asthma
Asthma that is triggered by smoke, pollutants, exercise or viruses.
What are different types of Asthma?
Allergy-induced and non-allergic asthma.
What is the brief history of asthma?
Asthma (from the Greek word “wind” or “to blow”), was first used by Hippocrates to refer to respiratory distress and to make its connection to a person’s environment. Some early remedies included horse blood, ephedra, tobacco, arsenic, cleanliness and special diet.
Define Allergen
Any substance that causes an allergic reaction.
Define Leukotrienes
Chemicals found in the lungs that cause inflammation and muscle constriction. Also cause increased mucus production in the airways.
What is the etiology (cause) of asthma?
The exact cause of asthma is unknown, but most cases are attributed to allergies and exposure to allergies.
What is the pathology of asthma?
It involves to main conditions, inflammation and muscle constriction, both which affect airflow to and from the lungs.
What are some symptoms of asthma?
Shortness of breathe, chest tightening, coughing, wheezing and sleeping issues.
How is asthma diagnosed?
Medical history, physical exams or pulmonary function tests.
What are some treatments for asthma?
Fast-acting (inhaler, nebulizer), long-term control medicine (inhaled, pill, liquid), fast and long-acting control (bronchodilators).
What are the prognosis for people diagnosed with asthma?
Although asthma is not curable, people live normal, healthy lives. Self-care is important to the quality of life.
