Immunology Flashcards
1
Q
four environmental factors that can induce autoimmunity?
A
- molecular mimicry
- intercurrent infections
- tissue damage
- superantigens
2
Q
define molecular mimicry
A
foreign components break tolerance to self-antigens
3
Q
define intercurrent infections
A
immune responses can potentiate ongoing AI reactions
4
Q
define tissue damage/ antigen sequestration
A
self antigens that were hidden are released
5
Q
what is myasthenia gravis?
A
autoantibodies (IgG) that bind to ACh receptors
6
Q
what other autoimmune conditions is myasthenia gravis associated with?
A
SLE
RA
thyrotoxicosis
7
Q
pathophysiology of myasthenia gravis
A
- Th cells stimulate B cells leading to production of anti-AChR IgG
- thymic cells are attacked and immune complexes form
- these block ACh binding leading to defective nerve transmission
- muscle endplate is destroyed
