Motivation, Emotion, and Intro to Motivational Interviewing
the arousal, direction, and persistence of a person’s behavior, which energizes and activates them to work toward a desired outcome or goal

Emotions are by-products of motivation that also fuel motivation and drive change. Providing space for clients to express and work through strong emotions can lead to __ __

- guide client to become aware of emotions, allowing them to lean into feels rather than turn away from discomfort
- provide an empathetic connection

the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions and handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically
Emotional intelligence (EQ)
What are the 3 skills involved in EQ?
- emotional awareness - your’s and others
- ability to harness emotions & apply them to tasks
- ability to manage emotions - regulate ur own + approp respond to to others
To help clients harness their emotions as energy for goal achievement…
- monitor their emotional state + ack what they’re feeling
- ask clients to name emotion feeling
- show compassion while remaining grounded
- remind clients that emotions are just energy in motion
- help clients tap into to fuel and sustain actions toward goal achievement
What is motivational interviewing?
a non-directive, client-centered counseling approach to support change in an engaging and non-threatening way; a collaborative and goal-oriented type of communication with an emphasis on the language of change
What is the overall goal of MI?
The overall goal of MI is to help clients manage their progress toward their personal goals and become accountable for their thoughts, actions, and beliefs.
MI is designed to do these things
- strengthen intrinsic motivation for commitment to goal
- work with client through their ambivalence about pursuing their health goals (esp in middle sessions)
- work thru the paradox of change

What are the 4 basic principles of motivational interviewing?
- express empathy thru reflective listening
- reveal discrepancies b/w client’s goals/values & current behavior
- roll w/ resistance
- support client self-efficacy, autonomy & optimism
What are the principles of MI (RULE)?
R – Resist the righting reflex (urge to fix things, tell a client what to do, or share advice)
U – Understand client’s motivation & values around making a change
L – Listen with curiosity for “change talk” and “sustain talk.”
E – Empower client to build self-efficacy
What is the spirit of motivational interviewing (PACE)?
P - partnership (collab w/ clients)
A- acceptance + autonomy (accept client’s decisions; more likely to change if their reasons/motivation are driving forces)
C- compassion (no judgement regardless of outcome)
E - evoking (coach’s job to evoke/pull answers out of client rather than educate or tell them what to do)
The 4 major communication techniques of MI are (OARS)?
O - open-ended ?s
A- affirm (affirm client’s choices + actions)
R - reflect (reflections that point to discrepancies)
S- summarize (summarize to keep convo moving forward and track progress)
