Emancipation Proclamation

A

President Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation issued January 1, 1863 that legally abolish slavery in all states that remained outside of the Union. While it did not immediately free a single slave, it signaled an end to the institution of slavery and a change in the war’s objectives. Also called for the mustering of Black men into service in the military.

A

Second African-American military unit organized in the North; led by Robert Gould Shaw, the unit served with distinction, most famously in the assault on Fort Wagner.

Gettysburg Address

A

A three minute speech given by Abraham Lincoln at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. He praised the sacrifice of the dead and asked his listeners to resolve “that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
