Writ of Habeas Corpus
Forcing government authorities to justify their arrest and detention of an individual.
During the Civil War, Lincoln suspended Habeas corpus to stop protests against the draft and other anti-Union activities.
Copperheads
A faction of the northern Democrats, also known as Peace Democrats, who opposed the war and wanted an immediate peace settlement with the Confederacy.
New York draft riots
Riots in New York city in response to a new federal draft law.
-Thousands of Irish and Irish-American workers rioted for four days until federal troops suppressed them.
- Resented having to fight a war on the behalf of slaves.
-Targets: free African-Americans and Republicans.
Border States
States bordering the North: Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia. Slave states that remained loyal to the Union.
Green Backs
Paper currency used to finance the war (by the government).
- Was not backed by gold or silver.
Battle of Bull Run
First major battle of the Civil War and a victory for the South. Demonstrating the war would be long and costly.
Battle of Shiloh
Battle fought on the Tennessee-Mississippi border in the Western Theater.
Bloodiest battle up to that point in the war.
Second Bull Run
1). Significant Confederate victory
2). opened up Lee’s path to attempt to invade the North.
Peninsula Campaign
Spring/Summer 1862 - first large scale offensive in Eastern Theater; McClellan attempts to capture Richmond, Virginia but fails; Robert E. Lee becomes commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.
Battle of Antietam
Tactical draw but strategic victory for the North as McClellan stops Lee’s invasion of the North. Demonstrated the strength of the Union army and gave Lincoln the military victory he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Discouraged the French and British from recognizing or supporting the Confederacy. Bloodiest single day in American history.
Battle of Gettysburg
Turning point of the war and largest and bloodiest battle of the war (50,000 deaths); Union victory prevents a planned invasion of the North and marks the high point of the Confederacy; from this point on the South will be on the defensive.
Battle of Vicksburg
Union gains control of the Mississippi River and splits the Confederacy in two.
- marks the beginning of total war.
Atlanta Campaign
Resulted in the capture of Atlanta, one of the last remaining Southern urban centers and a major railway hub. Further divided the Confederacy and set the stage for Sherman’s March to the Sea.
“March to the Sea”
Sherman’s march from Atlanta, Georgia, to Savannah, Georgia which cut off Confederate supplies received by the sea. They wanted to destroy the Southern economy and morale, leading to Southern surrender. Purposefully targeted Southern infrastructure. Total war.
Appomattox surrender
Lee surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse after abandoning the defense of Richmond and Petersburg.
