Grimke Sisters
White Sisters raised in a slave-owning family in South Carolina who soon became nationally known to be the first white women advocates of abolition.
William Lloyd Garrison
Lived from 1805-1879.
Abolitionist, journalist and social reformer.
Editor of the newspaper “the Liberator” and one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Association.
Immediate abolition
Support the immediate end of slavery
Gradualists
Wanted to end slavery gradually (supporting cash or financial compensation).
Annexation
The adding of a region to the territory of an existing political unit
Sectionalism
Loyalty to one’s own region or section of the country, rather than to the country as a whole.
Texas Revolution
Conflict between Anglo-American Texas settlers and Mexico from 1835-1836 resulting in the formation of the Republic of Texas
Manifest Destiny
The idea that Euro-Americans were sent from God to settle the North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Expansionism
policy that calls for expanding a nation’s boundaries while getting more territory in exchange.
Oregon Country
The disputed territory of the Pacific Northwest between the US and British Canada.
Republic of Texas
independent republic after Texas gained independence from Mexico but before annexation by the U.S.
Mexican War/Mexican-American War (1846-1848)
Conflict between the US and Mexico after the American annexation of Texas.
The U.S. fought for Mexican soil (mainly).
The U.S. evaded and took over most of Mexico’s land
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
Treaty that ended the Mexican War, granting the U.S. control of Texas, New Mexico, and California in exchange for $15 million.
Mexican Cession
Awarded as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. U.S. paid $15 million for 525,000 square miles.
Wilmot Proviso
Proposal by David Wilmot to ban slavery in territory acquired from Mexican War. Failed in Senate twice.
Slave power
The idea that the South was trying to gain control over the Federal Government in order to spread slavery throughout the country.
Free Soil
A political movement that opposed the expansion of slavery, specifically into the newly acquired western territories.

Mass migration to California following the discovery of gold in 1848.
