Eugene McCarthy challenges LBJ for the Democratic nomination on a platform of ending the war. LBJ decides not to run for re-election. Robert Kennedy announces he will also run for the Democratic nomination but is assassinated in June 1968. After the disastrous and violent Democratic National Convention in Chicago in the summer of 1968, VP Hubert Humphrey beats out Eugene McCarthy. Republicans nominate Richard Nixon.
