household technology Flashcards
factors to consider when choosing appliances - information
source information about appliance e.g. brands and model available, or features included e.g. auto defrost before buying to ensure to needs specific needs
factors to consider when choosing appliances - cleaning
ensure appliances are easy to clean in order to reduce the time and effort required to maintain them
factors to consider when choosing appliances - design
consider appliance that have a design that will coordinate with the existing decor of the home, check the measurements of the space available in the home to ensure the appliance will fit
thermostat
controls the internal temperature once set, it maintains the temperature between 3-4*C
refrigerant
cooling the cabinet by drawing the heat from inside
working principles - compressor
-found at the base of the refrigerator
-contains the gas refrigerant isobutane
-a motor pump connected to the compressor forces the gas refrigerant into the condenser above
working principles - condenser
-cools the gas refrigerant and condenses it into a liquid
-it is then sent to the evaporator above
-the cooling finds at the back fo the refrigerator radiate or realise heat generated during the process, keeping the condenser cool
working principles - evaporator
-found at the top of the refrigerator, rapidly evaporates the liquid refrigerant into a gas by drawing heat from the fridge cabinet
-this cools the internal temperature of the refrigerator cabinet to 3-4*C
working principles - thermostat
-connected to the compressor
-maintains the constant internal temperature of 3-4*C within the refrigerator cabinet y turning on and off the motor when needed,e.g. if the door ir left open
guidelines for using a refrigerator - 1
avoid overfilling and allow space between foods to enable air to circular and to keep foods at 3-4*C
guidelines for using a refrigerator - 2
to avoid raising the internal temperature, cool wam or cooked foods to room temperature before placing them in the refrigerator
guidelines for using a refrigerator - 3
store raw meat on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator to prevent drip contamination onto foods below, which could cause food poisoning
guidelines for using a refrigerator - 4
keep foods, e.g. cooked ham and cheese, covered to prevent it from drying out, covering also prevents the transfer of odours from strong smelling foods to other foods, e.g. fish odours to milk
the contribution of technology to efficient home management - 1
in the past, household tasks e.g. washing clothes were time consuming and labour intensive. nowadays, technological advances e.g. the washing machine, have reduced the amount of laabpur required, allowing more time for leisure e.g. walking
the contribution of technology to efficient home management - 2
home are now cleaner and more hygienic places to live since appliances e.g. vacuum cleaners, are more efficient at cleaning compared to doing the job by hand
