What are the characteristics of Stage 1 of HIV infection?
Acute retroviral infection with symptoms such as fever, arthralgia, malaise, lymphadenopathy, headache, and sore throat. It can last up to 18 months from infection.
What are the characteristics of Stage 2 of HIV infection?
Weight loss less than 10%, rashes, herpes zoster within 5 years, recurrent UTI, and normal activity performance scale.
What are the characteristics of Stage 3 of HIV infection?
- Weight loss greater than 10%,
- Chronic candidiasis and herpes zoster,
- Vulvovaginal candidiasis for more than 1 month,
- PTB, severe bacterial infections,
- Generalized lymphadenopathy,
- Malaise, muscle pain, and bed-ridden performance scale less than 50%.
What are the characteristics of Stage 4 (AIDS) of HIV infection?
- HIV wasting syndrome,
- PCP,
- Toxoplasmosis of the brain,
- Cryptococcal meningitis,
- Herpes simplex zoster,
- Lymphoid intestinal pneumonitis,
- Neurological signs,
- Candidiasis, and tumors such as Kaposi’s sarcoma.
What are antiretroviral drugs (ARV) meant to do?
Prevent the multiplication of the virus in the body and inhibit protein synthesis by the virus.
What are some side effects of ARV therapy?
Pancreatitis, hypersensitivity type 1, liver cirrhosis, hepatic jaundice, kidney problems, and thyrotoxicosis.
What is the eligibility for ARV therapy?
Being sero-positive, understanding ARV therapy implications, being in groups 3 or 4, having a CD4 count less than 200, or being in stage 3 or 4 regardless of the CD4 count.
