Histology Flashcards
3 functions of the nasal cavity?
- Warm the air inhlaed
- Provide moisture
- Filtering
What cell type lines the vestibule of the nasal cavity?
Keratinised Stratified Squamous Epithelium
What is respiratory Epithelium?
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar epithelium with goblet cells
What lines the nasal cavity
Respiratory epithelium
What lines the oropharynx and why
Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
- needs to be tougher against abrasion (food and air)
What lines the larynx
Respiratory epithelium
What lines the vocal folds
Stratified squamous epithelium
Histology of the trachea
15-20 C shaped cartilage rings
the open C part has fibroelastic tissue
A feature of the bronchi
irregularly shaped cartilage plates
Histology of the bronchioles
- lack cartilage
- epithelium changes ffrom columnar –> cubodial
- smooth muscle
What lines the terminal bronchioles
Cubodial ciliated epithelium
Histology of the alveoli
spony in nature
type 1 and 2 alveoli cells
alveolar macrophages
What is type 1 alveoli cells
- covers 90%
- simple squamous epithelium (minimal thickness)
- blood air barrier
What is type 2 alveoli cells
- produce surfactant to reduce surface tension between the visceral and parietal pleura
Alveolar macrophages
- aka dust cells
- phagocytos inhaled foreign objects
