Histology Flashcards
Describe the appearance of connective tissue under microscope.
Typically white unstained portion of the slide with groups of disorganized nuclei.
4 extracellular components around the connective tissue.
GAG’s, Collagen (stained), lymphocytes, Adipocytes,
Describe Simple Columnar Epithelial cells.
uni-layered, column shaped cells that line
Describe lymphocytes under microscope.
Very round, dark nuclei.
Describe fibroblasts under microscope.
Flat, thin, elongated nucleus typically in the connective tissue compartment.
Describe the functions & roles of fibroblast cells.
Secretes extracellular matrix material including collagen, matrix metallo-proteins.
Describe major differences between connective tissue of skin and that of small intestine lamina propria.
- The skin has lower cell density relative to the ECM than in the small intestine.
- small intestine
lymphocytes and white blood cells in the small intestine.
- White blood cells are the “immigrants” of the small intestine.
- Small intestine has more lymphocytes for immune defense.
Describe cartilage under microscope.
- Cartilage has long chains of cells due to “interstitial growth”. This is located on the epiphyseal growth plate.
- The cells embedded in the cartilage will always be chondrocytes. Cells in this region but close to the bone are a bit more differentiated and do not really divide.
What is occurring in the bone matrix?
- Chondrocyte hypertrophy and calcification of the matrix
- There is a battle between chondrocytes and osteoclast to degrade and build the bone.
Describe the osteocyte in bone.
-Osteocyte is embedded in the bone matrix, it’s precursor is the osteoblast.
Describe Bone Marrow under microscope.
-identified as densely packed nucleated cells with in a pocket in the bone.
What is bone marrow?
-Red bone marrow is hematopoietic stem cells. So called because it stains red.
What cranks out the cell matrix? what is it’s progenitor?
-Osteoblast (NOT osteocytes).
- The precursor is the osteoprogenitor
- typically not in the bone matrix.
Describe bone under microscope.
-Bone stains dark and is not nucleated. It does have cells embedded in it that are nucleated themselves.
