Assess the reasons why Henry VIII wanted to go to war in the years 1509-13

A

Henry’s desire for war in France was a deeply personal longing to experience the glory and honour of winning the French throne. Ultimately - his desire to emulate Henry V was the most important factor

  • -> lack of dynastic threats second most –> crafted climate in which he could fulfil dream
  • -> lastly his contrast to his father – determined to gain validation from people and not be seen a boring but without the stable climate inherited and the deeply rooted desire that underpinned both factors Henry would not have been

  • emulate Agincourts –> won parts of France but heir = minor so re stole
  • craved external validation of becoming the perfect renaissance ‘knight’
  • man of conviction - his judgement was akin to questioning God – when set on goal he pursued it (tunnel vision)
  • competed w/ larger European powers such as Francis I and Charles V
